Jersey Shore Partnership Opposes Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling

The Department of the Interior has released the next phase of the 5-year Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. The plan includes opening the entire Atlantic Ocean from Maine to Florida for drilling including all of the Jersey Shore and NY’s South Shore and would allow rigs to come within 3 miles of beaches.

According to U.S. Department of the Interior, between 2001 and 2015, there were 589 oil spills in federal waters. An oil spill would destroy New Jersey’coastal economy, cause substantial environmental impacts and infrastructure damage; destroy property values, and result in insurmountable business losses.

Please see fact sheet for correct stats. NY’s coastal economy is valued at 20 billion, not NJ’s. However, please note that a previous version may have stated this as NJ’s coastal economy makes up for about 2/3 of NJ’s tourism. Correct statement from fact sheet reads: “Most of New Jersey’s $44.1 billion dollar tourism industry success is generated at the Jersey Shore.”
